The Monte Carlo name came from the Principality of Monaco and the car was first made for the 1970 model year. It was considered a personal luxury car. Production ended in 2007 though there was a break in making it from 1989 through 1994.
The Monte Carlo shared a platform with the Grand Prix until the early 1980’s.
The 1988 models were the final year for the fourth-generation Monte Carlo.
By 1988, the Sport Coupe had been discontinued and only the LS and SS models remained. The SS had tinted windows, twin mirrors, an AM/FM radio, and a built-in clock. The 1988 models had a lay-down style spoiler unlike the 1987 models that had either a stand-up type spoiler or the lay-down style.
The Monte Carlo was introduced in 1969 and available only as a four-door coupe. It came out at the height of the GM muscle car power era. It started as Chevrolet’s version of the Pontiac Grand Prix. Although the Monte Carlo was developed by Chevrolet’s Pete Estes, it was formally introduced in 1969 by John Z. DeLorean who succeeded Estes as Chevrolet’s general manager.
