The 1970 Firebirds weren’t introduced until half-way through the 1970 model year because of a labor strike.
They were offered as fastback coupes only with the Trans Am as the high-performance model.
The Ram Air III had a functional reverse-facing Shaker hood scoop. A front air dam and decklid used air pressure to help push the car down onto a specially tuned suspension that had heavy-duty front and rear sway bars, stiffer springs, large front disc brakes and rear drum brakes.
The cars had the same impact-absorbing front as other Firebirds. Pontiac said the unique front air dam and fender air extractors created 50 pounds of downforce on the nose at highway speeds and equal downforce on the back end due to the large decklid lip and small spoilers in front of the rear wheels.
The Ram Air III could do a low 14-second lap time at a dragstrip.
The Ram Air IV had bigger ports, better heads, and an aluminum intake manifold for 370 h.p. They are a true piece of race muscle car history.
The rare and exclusive Ram Air V with special-order solid lifters and tunnel-port heads had 500 h.p.
The interior had bucket seats with headrests, Formula steering wheel, and a center floor console. Instruments included a tachometer that redlined at the top center of the gauge as race cars did.
