This car was made to be a “pro-touring” car. The build took two years and was finished in 2014. Most of the work was done by the owner. It was a “shell” when he bought it.
The Mustang was introduced in 1964 and 22,000 were sold the first day it was available.
It created a new market segment known as the 2 + 2 or “ponycar”. It was compact, tight, had decent economy, brisk performance, sporty looks, and a reasonable price. The long-hood, short-rear-deck, sculptured body sides, fully exposed wheel openings, and restrained use of bright trim gave the car a unique look. Three optional V-8 engines with up to 271 h.p. were available. Other options included an automatic transmission, power steering and brakes, and air conditioning.
Competition came from Chevy’s Camaro, Pontiac’s Firebird, and the Mercury Cougar. Ford anticipated this and designed the 1967 Mustang to have a 390 cu. in V-8 and restyled the look and interior.
The Fastback option became available in 1965 and in 1967 all models had a facelift. They became larger and had more passenger and luggage space. Larger engines were offered. The GT390 2+2 in Highland Green was featured in the film “Bullitt” with Steve McQueen.
There weren’t many changes for the 1968 models compared to the 1967’s. There were small changes to the interior and exterior. Safety features were added. New options included front disc brakes and an AM/FM stereo radio. The 1968 models also had front and rear side marker lights, an energy-absorbing steering column, and flush-mounted interior door handles.
