The Jaguar E-Type was a British sports car manufactured by Jaguar Cars Ltd. between 1961 and 1974. Also known as the XK-E it joined style and performance to create a mass-produced supercar. It was a replacement for the Jaguar D-type.
The Jaguar XK-E for the North American market was produced from 1961 – 1975. It had a combination of aesthetics, high performance and competitive pricing that set it up as a model in the car world. It claimed 150 mph top speed, a 0 – 60 acceleration in less than 7 seconds, and improvements that became standard industry-wide.
Except for the transmission and engine, the E-Type was completely new. The chassis had a monocoque (single body shell) center section and anti-roll bars in the front and back. Wishbone and torsion bars were in front. Wheels were suspended on coil spring-shock absorber units, two on each side. The differential was mounted to a steel cross-member that also held inboard disc brakes. It had four-wheel disc brakes.
The 1964 XK-E was mostly unchanged in styling from previous years. Both a coupe and roadster were available. The roadster’s base price was $5,300.00 and it came with a dual-overhead-cam six-cylinder engine with 230 cu. in. and 265 h.p. A 4.2-liter engine was available later in the year. It had a larger bore than the 3.8-liter version, but horsepower was the same.
The E-Type was first shown in 1961 at the Geneva Motor Show and in New York. It had race-bred performance and curving body lines. It is one of only a few cars on permanent display at New York’s Museum of Modern Art.
